LPIRG Events! November 26th - Dec 2nd

Need a break from studying for finals?...no? How about a break from procrastinating? I thought so. LPIRG has three events happening this coming week for you to check out: a man talking about boats; a talkie; and an opportunity to make some new friends and get on TV.

MONDAY the 26th
SACPA on Campus: Canadian Navy and International Naval Security with Commander Kelly Larkin

Commander Larkin is the current captain of the HMCS Calgary, a multi-role patrol frigate which is slatted to be deployed to the Persian Gulf next year. Cmdr. Larkin will speak about the Canadian Navy's role as part of the U.S. led coalition forces in that region, as well as share his thoughts on the future of the Northwest Passage and the debate over Arctic sovereignty. Cmdr. Larkin has over of two decades of experience in the Canadian Navy and has held a wide variety of postings, including several aboard submarines (I'm certain none of them took place inside a mall). As an aside, LPIRG is currently looking for students to get involved in next semester's SACPA on Campus speaker series. If you're interested in getting involved, please send me an email at cody.sharpe(at)gmail.com and I'll introduce you to the right people.

The Commander will speak at noon in Andy's Place (AH100). Lunch will follow. This event costs $5 for students and $10 for the general public.

TUESDAY the 27th
Wal-Town

A project that began in 2004 came to fruition in 2006 with the release of Wal-Town, a film which takes a hard and critical look at Wal-Mart's way of doing business. Topics broached in the film include this massive corporation's affect on the communities they enter, their labour relations practices, and their impact on human rights, both domestically and abroad. The creators of the film purposefully included the opinions and views of Wal-Mart employees, managers and other advocates via frank interviews. A preview can be viewed below.

The film will be shown at 7PM in Ballroom A of the Students' Union Building and will be followed by an open group discussion. Admission is free.

SATURDAY the 1st

Lethbridge VS. Wal-MartA group of students from LCI, along with their social studies teacher, are planning a protest rally against Wal-Mart. We here at LPIRG love a good rally so we're jumping on the bandwagon and inviting everyone at the U of L to paint a sign, hop on the bus and join us for a peaceful display of democracy in action (hence why we're also showing Wal-Town this week). If you're on Facebook, add yourself to the event located here.

This event is taking place at 1PM. Admission is free...though don't expect us to post your bail.
