Fairly quiet week coming up. The first meeting of the Events and Community Outreach Committee is this Thursday, and a pretty creative forum on women and democracy is taking place Saturday. I've also got some information for you on the upcoming LPIRG board elections. Finally, our complete film schedule is now finished and ready for viewing here.
THURSDAY the 7th
Events and Community Outreach Committee Meeting
This'll be the first meeting of the ECO committee and I'd like to have students involved with it. This committee will be responsible for organizing, promoting and carrying out events, as well as making connections with other like-minded community groups. If you've thought about running to join LPIRG's board, or are just looking to do some creative volunteer work, here's your opportunity. We'll brainstorm some event possibilities, try to identify other community groups that might like to be involved and create a committee mandate to submit to the LPIRG board for approval. I'll be chairing this meeting and keeping everything on track, so it won't take any more than an hour.
This meeting will take place at noon in the LPIRG office, located just off of Galileo's Gallery. If you've any questions, please email me at cody.sharpe(at)uleth.ca.
SATURDAY the 9th
Dialogue on Democracy: Where are the Women?
Sponsored by the Famous 5 Foundation and the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership, this interactive theater presentation discusses why women aren't equally represented at all political levels (only 64 of 308 MPs are female) and what can be done to change this. From the event's website, "it’s time for some radical ideas. How about gender quotas or an all-women’s party? Or a tax structure that reflects the gender split in representation?"
This event runs from 11:30AM 'till 3PM and is being held at the Galt Museum. Lunch is included, and you can register online or by calling (403) 244-6666. Cost is $20 for community members, $10 for students.
Nominations for the LPIRG board of directors elections are fast approaching. Below is a complete timetable of when things have to happen by, including nomination closures, orientation meetings and voting dates. I'll be posting more info on the elections as the time approaches, but if you're thinking of running I'd encourage you to drop by the office and speak with Shelia about the job's obligations sooner rather than later.
