LPIRG Event! January 14th - 20th

Happy New Year & welcome back to the U of L! LPIRG is working on several events for you to take advantage of over the coming semester, and below is a look at our first two of the semester. Don't forget to drop by our office - located in Galileo's Gallery - to check out our alternative film and book library, get more info on upcoming events, or talk to Shelia about how LPIRG can help you conduct your research, engage with your activist interests or organize your own events.

TUESDAY the 15th
Carbon Trading Critic Larry Lohmann

In conjunction with the Sierra Youth Coalition and the Durban Group for Climate Justice, LPIRG is pleased to present our first speaker of the new year. He's the editor of Carbon Trading: A Critical Conversation on Climate Change, Privatisation and Power, which is a wide-ranging and well researched critique of carbon trading emissions schemes. In Lohmann's opinion, carbon trading results in few real environmental benefits because it doesn't place an emphasis on reducing reliance on fossil fuels, but rather on swapping credits between unindustrialized, non-polluting states and industrialized polluting ones. Lohmann attended the recent Bali conference on climate change to present his work and will share his experiences from it.

This free talk will be taking place in Ballroom B in the Students' Union Building at 7PM. The day after this event...

WEDNESDAY the 16th
Hoodwinked: The Myth of Free Trade

LPIRG's first Cinema Politica film of the semester is a Canadian-made documentary which takes a long and hard look at NAFTA, the assumptions that it's based upon, and the economic realities it both creates and perpetuates. It also discusses the impact that free trade has on quality of life for individual citizens and the sovereignty of states. A segment of the film can be viewed below.

This free screening will take place in Galileo's Gallery at 7PM. Refreshments will be provided and an open discussion will follow.
